Take Good Action

With a month to go before an historic election I feel restless. I find myself asking What do I want? What do I need? And I know that of all the ideas that percolate in my soul, I know what I most need right now is something under my control. Something that I can DO

If you’re in the same place, I have two offerings for you this week. One is about parenting and the other is about politics. My hope is that one and perhaps both of these offerings will help you and those you love take good action.

On parenting. I’m part of an absolutely amazing virtual parenting conference October 5-9 called “Raising Resilient Kids in an Anxious World” put on by the organization Happily Family (as in “we’re happily a family” which I think is a unique and cool construct) that is the brainchild of Cecilia and James Hilkey who are the parents of two teens. Every six months Cecilia and James offer up a bunch of parenting experts—all of whom vibe in the space of enhancing compassion, resilience, calm, and connectedness between ourselves and our kids and our partner (if we’ve got one). This year I get to be one of the speakers alongside some of the biggest names in parenting. The conference is next week, October 5-9, and did I mention it’s FREE? You can find out more about it and register for it here. While I’m an expert of a sort, I’m also a parent very much still working to support my now 19 and 21 year olds, and I’m very excited about what I can learn from these amazing folks.

On politics. While we talk a lot about retaking the White House and Senate, it is also incredibly important that the Democrats retain control of the House of Representatives in this year's elections. So I’m co-hosting an awesome nationwide call on October 4 (4:30pmPT/7:30pmET) to support six House of Representative candidates (incumbents and challengers) who are facing very close races.

We’ll get to meet and hear from all six candidates about their backgrounds, the campaign ahead, and their policy priorities—and they’ll take questions from the audience. You can RSVP/donate here. These exciting candidates are incumbents Abigail Spanberger (Virginia) and Xochitl Torres Small (New Mexico), and four challengers Adair Ford Boroughs (South Carolina), Cameron Webb (Virginia), Dan Feehan (Minnesota), and Sri Preston Kulkarni (Texas). All six races could go either way, so our financial and volunteer help as we enter the final month of the campaign will make a big difference. Please note it IS a fundraising call but the donation amount is flexible with suggested levels starting at $100 (in total, not per candidate). I realize this is a lot of money. Give what you can. Participation is what matters! And as all six campaigns are in great need of volunteer assistance in the four remaining weeks ahead, you will have an opportunity to check a box indicating you would like to be contacted about volunteering. All six candidates are really interesting and dynamic people, so it will be a fun event to pull your friends into whether they are actively engaged in politics or not. The event will last one hour.

Whether it’s parenting or politics, it all feels kind of pressing right now at least to me. So if you think either or both of these opportunities would resonate with friends or family please forward. No matter what, I am in this with you. As the weather begins to turn and the leaves begin to fall, here’s to a lovely October filled with good actions and outcomes.
